BCCI announced Indian teams for all three formats for the next Australian tour. But the final squad didn’t include players like Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant. Although Sharma was unsurprisingly ruled out due to injury, the exclusion of Pant from the limited squad left fans in awe.
But Virender Sehwag is not surprised, unlike the others. “It was no surprise that Pant was not included,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz. “During the last tour, he was not in the XI of play despite his form. KL Rahul had performed well as a wicket keeper and he was used as a regular wicket keeper in the limited series, and Rishabh Pant was sent off, ”said Sehwag.
“It could have been a way to send a message to Rishabh Pant that he needs to change his style of play. He would continue to lose his wickets, and he doesn’t finish games and he has to learn how to finish games. If he doesn’t, he won’t stand a chance.
In the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Pant had scored 350 points including a century. Sehwag further recalled how the Indian team would use Rahul Dravid as their wicket keeper option ahead of MS Dhoni’s arrival as it gave them an extra stick option.
Sehwag on Dravid
“During our time Rahul Dravid was used as a wicket keeper because we didn’t have a good keeper until the arrival of MS Dhoni. So we used Dravid as a keeper because he would be used as an extra hitter in the team, ”he said.
“But here Rishabh Pant is a good keeper, but the way he gives his wickets Kohli and Ravi Shastri might not be happy with him. Only Rishabh Pant can make that change – he has to complete matches whenever he gets a chance. He has to prove that he has the capacity to return to the Indian team.
