Just as diving watches are rarely used for diving, surveys have shown that most buyers have never used the chronograph function in their eponymous watch. Yet the chronograph continues to be among the most popular watches on the market.

The chronograph was invented in 1816 by Louis Moinet, the legendary French watchmaker, painter, sculptor and former advisor to the pioneer of watchmaking Abraham-Louis Breguet. He coined the term chronograph as a combination of the Greek words “chronos” and “graphic”, which translates to “chronograph”. The writing part refers to the earliest design of the device by Moinet, which involved a watch with a pen attached to its index finger which marked the length of elapsed time. He had developed the apparatus for astronomical measurements. It was yet another French watchmaker, Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec, who turned Moinet’s idea into a full-fledged chronograph that we now know. He developed it for King Louis XVIII to time horse racing in 1821. With the advent of aviation in the early 20th century, the chronograph became a staple on airplanes, and later on wrists. pilots. It was the same for car and bicycle races. Modern chronographs, of course, do not perform such functions, but their popularity as a horological complication has endured and increased over the years. So it’s no surprise that chronographs are an essential part of every new watch collection. Here is our selection of the 12 best chronographs on the market.
