While 2020 is no laughing matter, this year’s Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards finalists made sure to put a smile on every face.
The wildlife photography finalists included the biggest and smallest creatures from around the world, but the top prize went to a coarse turtle. Photographer Mark Fitzpatrick was swimming off Lady Elliot Island in Queensland, Australia, when he came across a sea turtle, which raised its fin, resembling a middle finger.
“I was swimming with this turtle at Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef when he returned the bird to me!” said Fitzpatrick.
“We were surprised to see that sea lions are actively practicing yoga. I imagine that they must also have their zen “

Haven’t you heard that sharing is caring? (Scotland)
“Atlantic puffins are extraordinary travelers and their fishing skills are, as you can see, some do better than others! I love the second puffin look: can I have one please? “

Mom, look what I found! (Kaziranga, India)
“In Kaziranga National Park, this mother and her little elephant seemed completely unaware of our jeep and were walking around the pond. The mom seemed to be teaching her calf lessons on how to eat hyacinth: select a lush green bunch, pluck them from the root, smash the stems against the trunk to remove the mud, then swallow whole. The calf seemed to fully enjoy the lesson and duly followed its mother’s every move ”

Talk to the hand (Sri Lanka)
“This is the start of a scene that lasted about a minute and in which each of the rose-ringed parakeets used a foot to clean the partner’s beak. While the whole scene was very informative, this first photo with the male already holding his foot high in the air just needed to be taken out of context “

Kingfisher or mockingbird? (Kirkcudbright, Scotland)
“I was hoping a kingfisher would land on the ‘No Fishing’ sign, but I was over the moon when it landed for several seconds with a fish. He then flew away with his catch. It seemed to mock the person who put up the sign!

Having a laugh, Caithness, Scotland
“A young harbor seal cools off on a rock in Sinclair Bay, its thick layer of fat molding to the contours of the rock. Looks like he’s enjoying a really good joke, the seal is actually yawning ”

“This little Namibian elephant was slow to notice when his mother started to walk away. When he tried to hurry up and catch up, he tripped over his front feet and crashed into his face. His mother heard the commotion and immediately returned to help him up, and the calf continued on its way without damage except to its dignity.
