According to media reports, actor Johnny Depp will receive his full salary of over $ 10 million for the last Fantastic beasts film even though he only filmed one scene for the film before being asked to resign.

Previously, Johnny Depp confirmed on Instagram that he was stepping down from his role as Gellert Grindelwald in the upcoming Fantastic beasts film at the request of Warner Bros. This came after Depp lost a UK libel case against a tabloid which called him a ‘woman’s beater’.

The reason Depp received his full eight-figure salary is because of his pay-or-play contract which states that he must receive the full amount he is promised even if his role is recast or the film is not. not turned. This is a common clause in contracts for A-list celebrities.

JK Rowling statement on Depp’s casting as Grindelwald

Although Depp’s portrayal of Grindelwald was widely praised, it sparked huge controversy because her ex-partner, Amber Heard, had brought charges of domestic violence to her. At the time, once-beloved author JK Rowling, who gifted the world of Harry Potter and the Magic of Hogwarts, had championed Depp’s role in the film.

“Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable with our original cast, but really happy that Johnny is playing a major character in the films,” Rowling’s statement said.

The libel case was a murky one from the start as it shed light on many damaging details about Heard and Depp’s relationship. Depp’s attorneys had presented video evidence which they said showed how Heard attacked his sister.

According to media reports on the trial, Heard and his sister Whitney Henriquez testified in an attempt to corroborate Heard’s claims that Depp was violent towards him on 14 occasions.

“Some of the incidents were so serious that I was afraid he would kill me, intentionally or simply by losing control and going too far. He explicitly threatened to kill me on several occasions, especially later in our relationship, ”Heard said of Depp.

Depp claims Heard abused him

However, Depp has repeatedly insisted that he was the victim of domestic violence at the hands of Heard.

In December 2018, Heard wrote an editorial for The Washington Post where she detailed her allegations of abuse at Depp’s hands.

“I became a public figure representing domestic violence and felt the full force of our culture’s anger for women speaking out,” Heard wrote.

In response to the editorial, Depp sued Heard for $ 50 million for libel. Her lawsuit said Heard was “not a victim of domestic violence, she is an abuser.”

Heard admits to “hitting” Depp

In 2020, the Daily Mail viewed and published phone records where Heard admitted to “punching” Depp.

“I’m sorry I didn’t… hit you in the face with a good slap, but I was hitting you, it wasn’t hitting you.” Baby, you ain’t hit. I don’t know what the movement of my real hand was, but you’re fine, I didn’t hurt you, I didn’t hit you, I was hitting you, “she said in the recording.

“I can’t promise you that I won’t get physical again. My God, sometimes I get so angry that I lose it, ”she also said.

Depp’s former partners defend him

Johnny Depp’s two former partners, Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis, have come to his defense.

“The idea that he’s an incredibly violent person is the furthest thing from the Johnny I knew and loved. I cannot understand these accusations, ”Ryder wrote, according to Insider while Paradis stated that Heard’s accusations are nothing like the real Johnny I have known, and from my personal experience of many years, I can say that he was never violent or abusive towards me .
