In 1972, when Joe Biden was elected as one of America’s youngest senators, one of the first letters he received was from Mumbai, the sender with the same last name as his. About five years ago, he learned that there were five Bidens living in Bombay and that he probably had not yet established a connection with them.

The “Mumbai Biden” congratulated Joe on his election as a senator from Delaware and told him they were related to each other. He always wanted to follow up on the letter and get in touch with the “Biden of Mumbai”. However, with his active political life, his wish was never granted. Even now, that’s something he still wants to accomplish five decades later. The 77-year-old still brings up this story whenever he meets Indo-Americans and Indian leaders.

During his visit to Mumbai in 2013, the former US vice president speaking to the Bombay Stock Exchange stepped out of the script to tell his story of the famous “Biden of Mumbai”.

He explains, “It’s an honor to be back in India and to be here in Mumbai. Out of script for a second here, I was reminded – I was elected to the United States Senate when I was a 29 year old kid in 1972, and one of the first letters I received and I regret never having followed up. Maybe a genealogist in the public can follow me, but I received a letter from a man named Biden – Biden, my name – from Mumbai, claiming that we were related, Biden had told the public at amidst bursts of laughter. “Seriously. Suggesting that our mutual, big, big, big, something or other worked for the East India Trading Company in the 1700s and came to Mumbai.

A few years later, he brought up the same subject during his address to the US India Business Council. He explains: “He (Biden from Mumbai) returned to our common great-great-great-grandfather, 1848, who was British captain of the East India Tea Company. And he married, I believe, an Indian. And he settled in India.

After the Mumbai speech, a reporter gave Biden a list of five Bidens living in Mumbai. To what, he said in a speech to the US India Business Council: “You know what I mean? I didn’t realize I had so many… And I didn’t really follow and embarrass the Bidens in Mumbai. But the point is, it shows even more clearly what a small world is and how this global economy fits, quite frankly, to the world’s two largest democracies.
