“Baby Shark” became the most watched YouTube video on Monday, with over seven billion views. Released on June 17, 2016, the song is created by South Korean children’s education company Pinkfong.
It became an international hit by earning 32nd spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2019. The song’s catchy tune and vibrant graphics caught the attention of many toddlers and their parents. It was also included in the UK’s Top 40 list.
In four years, the children’s song has managed to break the previous record held by Luis Fonsi’s hit song in 2017, “Despacito”. The Washington Nationals baseball team took up the song as their anthem and won the World Series last year, prompting the White House to play the tune during the celebrations.
It was also included in the pandemic service, with a coronavirus-themed version, “Wash Your Hands,” teaching children the importance of personal hygiene.
So far, the five most viewed videos on YouTube are: “Baby Shark”, “Despacito”, “Shape of You”, “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and “Masha and the Bear – Recipe for Disaster”.
